Enamelling Workshop

9th March 2011
The Old Mill, Gorreg, Llandysul
10am - 4pm

Eight of us attended the enamelling workshop which was run by Sarah Wentworth at her beautiful renovated mill house in Gorrig, where we were given such a warm welcome by Sarah and her partner Mike, that we all felt very much at home right away.

Start of Workshop

Three of our group had been to a previous enamelling workshop run by Sarah, but for the other five, including myself, it was a completely new experience. Sarah showed us how to apply the enamel powders to the copper bases and then how to use heat to make the surface molten and gradually build up the layers of enamel. It was exciting to see the final effects as the powders changed colour when heated.

While we were engrossed in this activity, Sarah’s partner Mike was busy making teas, coffees and a wonderful lunch of soup with bowls of croutons, cheese and butter, and loaves of his homemade bread which we all sat around the kitchen table to enjoy.

In the afternoon we put the finishing touches to our pieces, Sarah was extremely  patient and encouraged us to experiment with glass millefiorre decoration, and beteen us we produced a collection of pendants, earrings, rings, and brooches, all beautiful and some pretty spectacular.

All in all it was a fascinating and wonderful day. We never did get to do the beadmaking…but that gives us a great excuse to return and enjoy more of Sarah’s wonderful teaching and Mike’s leek & potato soup!
