Ysgol Llanwenog Sports Day

Llanwenog WI has long been associated with Llanwenog School. Originally, the WI held their  monthly meetings at the school and in return, every year took all the pupils for a day out at Poppit Sands, providing the transport and the picnic. Nowadays, Llanwenog WI provides the celebratory tea and hands out the ribbons to the participants in the Llanwenog School Sports Day.

WI Ladies

This years Sports Day was held on June 26th and fortunately, in the wettest  June on record,  the rain held off . It was a very exciting day for childrens and spectators alike and even the cows in the adjoining field stopped grazing and lined up along the fence to watch the proceedings .

The WI was as usual well represented with members old and new contributing to the enjoyment of the day. Before the start of the races Heddwen Davies the headmistress read  a poem to the children written by WI secretary Diane Dagcioglu . Carol Denham the president, Kay  S. and Kathy T.  gave out the ribbons  and Carol Denham presented the shield and trophies.

When all the sports had been completed the by now very hungry children enjoyed a wonderful spread laid on and served by the WI ladies. A speech of thanks and a deafening Hip Hip Hooray from the children ended a most enjoyable day.

LLANWENOG SCHOOL SPORTS DAY
The morning dawns bright and fair,
Such excitement in the air,
The children are all in a flutter,
The teachers are all in a fluster!
The grass in the meadow’s been cut
and benches and chairs have been put
for the parents to have a seat,
while watching their offspring compete
for the trophy, and ribbons entwined
all neatly set out in straight lines.
The WI ladies are wearing
their aprons while they’re preparing
the sandwiches, cakes and treats
for the hungry athletes to eat
when the races have all been run
and the ribbons have all been won.
But wait! What’s that I hear
Are people starting to cheer?
Ah yes! the school bell has rung,
Llannwenog School Sport’s day’s begun!!
